Last year the Nottingham Post Sports Awards was honoured to welcome the British Army to its line-up of impressive sponsors.
Now, following the recent launch of this year’s event, organisers are thrilled to have them back on board and one again backing the Sportswoman of the Year award.
The category is open to women who have made an impact on a district, county, regional, national or international level and are helping the fight against gender inequality in sport, one medal at a time.
The British Army’s sponsorship comes from the 7 Infantry Brigade and HQ East ‘The Desert Rats’ which is the main regional Army presence in the East Midlands.
Lt Col Keith E Spiers TD is the Head of Army Engagement East and explained the reprisal of their sponsorship and why this particular category was a good match for them.
“This was a great opportunity for us to reinforce that all roles are open to everyone in the Army, with a focus on the individual and their ability,” he said.
“This is also a great medium to let people know the importance the Army places on sport and how the combination of fitness with a great team ethos forms part of the fabric for army life.
“As with anything in life, succeeding in sport takes dedication, determination, enthusiasm and passion. That’s why the Desert Rats’ teamwork with so many young people in schools using sport and STEM to help them understand the importance of these qualities.”
When all applications for the awards close on Friday 23 August, they will be placed into the hands of judges.
The category sponsors will be presenting the winner of the Sportswoman of the Year award with their accolade during the official awards’ ceremony, which takes place on Thursday 31 October.
And when it comes to the winning woman, Lt Col Spiers said: “My team inspire young people around the county of Nottinghamshire and we know that all those nominated for this award will be role models and a great inspiration to those young people also.”
The British Army joins a roster of sponsors that boasts the likes of Ikano Bank, Mazars, Revolution Cornerhouse, BMI The Park Hospital and the Royal Air Force.
